Hello there, and welcome to my 'quick 'n easy' Mini Course on Marketing for Salons & Spas...or should I say,
'Marketing for Salons & Spas That Actually Works!'
First, I guess you'd like to know why the heck you should listen to me...well, for a start, just like you (I'm guessing...) in my time in business I've wasted an awful lot of money on useless, 'feel good' marketing that didn't actually sell anything...!
It took me years to finally wake up...and years more to study and learn what does work. Luckily, I found out before...only just before, mind you...I went totally broke. I wish I knew back then what I know now. Fortunately for you, you don't have to make those same mistakes. Work smart, not hard...avoid mistakes by learning from me and other salons featured here.

Okay, let's get cracking! I'm going to cover a big bunch of stuff in this mini-course, but I'm going to make it absolutely super-simple. There's so much humbug and nonsense written and spoken about marketing, it makes most small business owners feel it's something they need a College Degree to be any good at it.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The theory- and practise- is very, very simple.
For starters...
forget branding, or image marketing.
Here's the truth - the truth that no fast-talking, pony-tailed, Hugo Boss-clad Advertising Account Executive or 'creative' will ever tell you...
Spend money on brand or image marketing, and you may as well stand in the bathroom and flush $100 notes down the toilet.

Here's a couple of examples of the typical 'image' kind of ads you'll see in the Yellow Pages:
Yep, pretty typical of the kind of stuff you'll see on any of the Yellow Pages under 'beauty', right? In fact, go take a look at your Yellow Pages right now...see what I mean?
A BLUR of sameness!
Pretty pictures of lovely looking ladies. Nice graphics. And you know what they amount to? Nothing more than expensive, oversized
Business Cards!
You see, they just don't sell anything. There's no offer, no guarantee, no headline, no testimonials...in fact, there's not a single thing in these ads...or just about any salon or spa ads you see in any Yellow Pages or newspaper or magazine...that compels the reader to pick up the phone right now!
It's just dreary, bland image advertising.
Yet that's what the 'creatives' at the ad agencies, and their henchmen, the ad sales reps, would rather you spend your hard-earned money on. Why?
Because you can't measure the response!
And the last thing they want is for you to be able to measure how well that expensive ad is doing for you...'cos next year, they'll be able to bully you into spending money on a BIGGER ad. Sure, that'll work...NOT!
(If the smaller ad didn't work, simply multiplying the size isn't going to make it work any better, just cost more!)
No wonder most salon & spa owners - come to think of it, just about any small business owner - groan when I ask them how much business their advertising brings them.

Sure, if you have a bank balance the size of Microsoft's, or Ikea's, or Coke's, do branding.
The people who sell you advertising in the newspaper, or the Yellow Pages, know nothing about how to write an ad, a sales letter, or a flier that compels your prospect to pick up the phone NOW and call you. FACT: "Only my kind of ads and fliers will do that for you."
That kind of marketing is called
'direct response' marketing.
And that's the only kind of marketing ANY small business should do. Because it's
Measurable
Accountable
Gutsy, and it
Gets Attention!
Direct Response is just advertising and direct mail that calls for an immediate response, one you can measure. You know, you've seen the ads on TV, "CALL NOW!" That's direct response. Why do you keep seeing it everywhere (except in the salon industry)? Because it WORKS!
I'm going to get into the detail of Direct Response in the next step, but here's a summary of what I've been talking about in Step #1:
- Don't do 'brand' or 'image' marketing - it's expensive, and you can't easily measure the results. In fact, it's toxic for small businesses who need to watch every dollar.
- Ad sales reps know nothing about what makes people respond to advertising. Graphic artists know even less. Never rely on a graphic artist to write a compelling ad for you.
- What your staff, your family, your best-est ever friend, Paris Hilton or even you think about your marketing fliers and ads doesn't matter a damn...
- The ONLY people whose opinions you should listen to about your marketing are those who put money in your till...your customers.
