how to write a Business Plan
I have read many, many
business books over the years, and none comes more
highly-recommended than this one by Kimberley Stevens.
If writing a business plan has you
developing a severe case of 'MEGO' (My Eyes Glaze Over)' you'll love
this book!
(and you can
download it from right

Kimberley promises to
help you build a business that is both profitable and fulfilling by
providing you with a step-by-step system for doing so.
And in an age where promises are made
and broken without a second thought, she actually keeps hers!
And, as a bonus, she
also includes all 34 forms in their original Microsoft Word format,
so you can customize them to meet your own needs.
Although it was
originally written for professional service businesses, many
sections are equally applicable to product-oriented businesses as
well.

But
first, a question...how come so many salon owners and aspiring salon
owners – heck, most small business people! – simply ‘hang out their
shingle’ and vaguely hope that everything will ‘sort of’ be okay in
the wash-up?
Clearly, YOU are not one of those....so let’s
be a bit down to earth.
A business plan does NOT have to be a
complicated document. Plenty of successful people in business will
tell you that a business plan that can’t be written on a single page
isn’t worth the paper it’s written on anyway.!
Essentially, the backbone of a business plan is the marketing
plan. After all, without aplan for how you’re going to market
your busines, there is no business to plan!
What is a business plan?
A business plan is bascally the ideas for your
business written down so that other people can understand what you
are trying to do. In this way other people can help you check that
the plan makes sense and you haven’t missed anything.
“Nobody plans to fail. They just fail to
plan.”
Why do you need one?
You need a plan to help you check that you have not missed
anything, you will also need it to help sell your idea to other
investors, be that you Auntie, your bank manager or partner. You
will also need it if you are going to ask people like suppliers for
credit, these may be your landlord, buying organisation or stockist.
Later you can use it to check against how you
did.
Who will want to see your business plan?
Any investor and all the above.
How do I best go about putting the plan
together?
The best way to put a plan together is the same way you eat an
elephant, one bite at a time. There are lots of plans out there,
including the Beauty Salon Business
Plan that has all the things you need. Just
fill in the gaps and press print. This gives you a great head
start.
Once you have your plan get it checked by your
mentor, your accountant and a person who has been in the industry if
you know one.
Who can help me put a plan together?
As mentioned above, the backbone of a business plan is the plan
you have for marketing your business. That’s why you’ve found
yourself here at Beauty Salon Marketing.
Apart from us, you can get help from your local association, local
chamber of commerce and also your bank may be able to direct you to
some retired business people who help out people who are going into
business for the first time.
NB: Remember free advice is often not
the best advice, be prepared to have to pay for these services. And
be careful about accepting advice from your cousin’s best friend who
happens to have once owned a corner deli that closed through lack of
customers.
-
What
research do I need to carry out?
How many people live within 5 miles of your salon?
-
How many people pass your shop every day?
-
How many other Salons are there within 10
mintues dive of you?
-
What price range are these other salons?
-
How many treatment rooms do all the other
salons have put together?
-
Who is the best known therapist in the
area?
-
Does your exisitng salon have an ad in the
Yellow Pages?
-
If you’re thinking of buying a salon, does
it already have an ad in the Yellow Pages?
-
Does the salon have a computerised mailing
list (for doing mail merges for client letters)?
What happens when I actually get up and
running?
Once you have sold your idea to your investors, including
yourself, then you will need the plan as a project roadmap of where
you want to go and how you are going to get there. The easy bits
are getting the lease, getting the equipment and covering all the
insurances etc. The hardest thing, however, is getting those
customers! And getting them to come back.
And the ONLY way you’re going to get clients,
and to get them coming back, is with your MARKETING. You need the
TOOLS and the SYSTEM to do it, and that’s where the
Essential Salon Owner’s Marketing Toolkit comes in!
