For many years, I was Executive
Producer of News for major commercial TV stations. When I finally
worked out that commercial TV wasn’t a job for grown-ups,
I left television and decided to start out in business for myself.
I knew very little about marketing, but I soon
acquired an agency for a unique product, and immediately
threw myself into trying to sell this product to the business
market.
And I made a big, big mistake.
I took advice on marketing from
so-called 'experts' who told me to do lots of branding and
'image' marketing. They said - these pony-tailed, Hugo Boss-clad
'account executives' in the advertising industry - that I needed to
'lift the profile' of the business, 'establish my market position',
and 'create an awareness in the market'.
So I took their advice. I spent
thousands on a 'market survey'. I got a graphic design company to
design me an impressive-looking logo, letterheads, lots of
'corporate branding'. I ran expensive ads in the local papers.
Month after month, I waited for
all this 'gee-whiz' stuff to start working. The phone remained
stubbornly silent. To my horror, I realized I'd spent money on
exactly the wrong kind of marketing for my small business.
In my first year, I flushed more
than $100,000
down the toilet on marketing that simply didn't work.
By then I was desperate. And I was
broke. Dead broke. I simply couldn't afford to even put gas in the
car. But I also
Got angry!
I was angry because I'd trusted
these idiot 'experts'. I figured 'look, these guys are talking about
marketing for the BIG end of town...corporations with millions of
dollars in the bank, who don't care if they spend a few million on
advertising that does nothing but stroke their egos. I want
marketing that works for small businesses. Marketing I can measure.'
The Discovery That Changed My
Life...and can
Change Yours Too, if You Want it to...
I began to study marketing...in
particular, the kind of marketing that almost NO business owner
knows about. It's called
Direct Response Marketing
I studied hard, bought manuals and
went to seminars. It was a
revelation!
Pretty soon, I understood exactly
what I'd been doing wrong. Almost overnight, I realized that almost everything I'd ever been told about advertising was wrong. It was a shocking thing, but at least I worked it out before I
spent another cent on the kind of marketing I'd been doing...before
I wasted another dollar on marketing that makes advertising creative
types feel good, but doesn't make any sales!
And I discovered the definition of
what marketing actually is:
"Good marketing is any activity
which brings customers to you with a pre-disposition to buy from you and
you alone, at the price you want them to pay..."
The key words here were
'pre-disposition' and 'at the price you want them to pay'.
Imagine that! It became so
obvious...that marketing for small business had nothing to do with 'branding' or 'image' or lovely 'graphics', or
even customer service...that's what happens after your
marketing's worked and brought the customer in.
It had everything to do with
-
Getting the attention of your customers - being prepared to stand out
and be BOLD! (Hint: the name of
your business is NOT what gets the attention of your customers!
How about a headline that says "The New Skin Treatment That
Makes Even a Plain Girl Beautiful"!)

Making them
an outrageous offer - and that does NOT mean discounting - in
fact, it has a lot to do with raising your prices! (In the tools you

In my former life, I would write
ads that looked 'professional' - in other words, didn't say much,
but 'looked' lovely. Now, I wrote ads that looked anything but
'professional' - they were full of copy - and they ...
... 'sold' like crazy!

As I was learning the secrets of
compelling direct response marketing - and applying them to my
business as well as for my private consulting clients - I came

... Little Known, but Powerful Formula ...
for writing compelling ads and
